Born in Trinidad in the West Indies, Su Goldfish wonders how her European parents ended up on this tropical island. They have no family in Trinidad. When Manfred, her father, refuses to talk about his past Su is determined to uncover the truth.
When she discovers her father is a German Jew who fled the terrors of Kristallnacht, Su wonders what happened to the rest of her family. Is she really the last one? Why won’t he tell her?
Su discovers feminism, art, activism and a sense of belonging in Sydney’s queer community but as her father grows more frail she is drawn back to him and his past. Time is running out.
A decades long search takes her round the globe as she uncovers secrets and lies, from Australia to Trinidad, North America to WW2 Germany. Told through a personal archive of photos and home movies that stretch across a century, the film reveals the inter-generational impact of loss and displacement on refugees and their families. This poignant and moving story, reveals the complexity of ordinary lives and the deep need we have to know who we are and where we come from.
