SUBMISSIONS OPEN SHORT AND FEATURE FILMS

Monday 2 December 2019
PictureWe are all migrants, winner of best short film 2019
We are now accepting submissions for feature length and short films, both drama and documentary. In particularly we encourage submissions from women directors and young film makers.

The theme of this years festival is the “The Other”. With over 500 years of non-conformism in the Calder Valley, the theme is fitting. We will be celebrating films by or about those who dare to be different, whether they exist in the margins, sit outside the mainstream or just plain don’t fit in. So films submitted need to be relevant by this theme.

To encourage submissions from young people there is also a specific prize and lower submission rate for those aged 18-26.

SUBMIT NOW via filmfreeway, where you can read the full list of rules.

RAFIKI STAR ANNOUNCED AS LATEST GUEST

Tuesday 5 March 2019
Rising star Sheila Munyiva will bring the film Rafiki to the first ever Hebden Bridge Film Festival. Munyiva was cast in her first major movie role as Ziki in Wanuri Kahiu’s film.

Rafiki is a ground-breaking film about two teenage girls secret relationship. The Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB) banned the film last year for "promoting lesbianism”.

Same-sex relations are criminalized in Kenya, LGBTQ+ people and their allies are often targets of verbal and physical injury, sexual violence, and social marginalization. The cast and crew took immense risks to make Rafiki.

The film has received international acclaim including recognition at Africa's largest film festival, Fespaco, which awarded Munyiva’s co-star Samantha Mugatsia the best actress award.

Rafiki will be shown on Sunday 24 March, including a Q&A with Shelia Munyiva at Hebden Bridge Picture House.

Louise Wadley, HBFF director, said

“Rafiki is the perfect film for the Hebden Bridge Film Festival. It aims to change perceptions and challenge stereotypes. Shelia Munyiva gives an outstanding performance as Ziki. We are delighted to be able to welcome her as a very special guest for the festival. She will discuss the film, it’s difficult journey to the screen and the positive impact it is having in Africa and around the world.”

Award winning Spanish film Carmen & Lola will be shown on Saturday 23 March. Basque filmmaker Arantxa Echevarría made her debut last year at Cannes with her story of forbidden love between two young women in Madrid’s close-knit Roma Community.

Director Arantxa Echevarría was the first Spanish female filmmaker with a feature film in competition at the Directors’ Fortnight at the Cannes Film Festival. She received the Goya Award for Best Director, Spain's principal national film awards.

The film is being shown in partnership with Happy Valley Pride at Hebden Bridge Picture House and will include a Skype Q&A with Arantxa.

Hynes will take part in a special Q&A to discuss the themes of the film and the production process.

“The Fight is a tiny film with a big heart and Hebden Bridge is a tiny town with a big heart. So this is the perfect match. I am delighted to be showcasing the Fight as part of the first ever Hebden Bridge Film Festival. I am so proud of the entire cast and crew and can’t wait to share it with those attending the festival.”
