Rising star Sheila Munyiva will bring the film Rafiki to the first ever Hebden Bridge Film Festival. Munyiva was cast in her first major movie role as Ziki in Wanuri Kahiu’s film.
Rafiki is a ground-breaking film about two teenage girls secret relationship. The Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB) banned the film last year for "promoting lesbianism”. Same-sex relations are criminalized in Kenya, LGBTQ+ people and their allies are often targets of verbal and physical injury, sexual violence, and social marginalization. The cast and crew took immense risks to make Rafiki. The film has received international acclaim including recognition at Africa's largest film festival, Fespaco, which awarded Munyiva’s co-star Samantha Mugatsia the best actress award. Rafiki will be shown on Sunday 24 March, including a Q&A with Shelia Munyiva at Hebden Bridge Picture House. |
Louise Wadley, HBFF director, said “Rafiki is the perfect film for the Hebden Bridge Film Festival. It aims to change perceptions and challenge stereotypes. Shelia Munyiva gives an outstanding performance as Ziki. We are delighted to be able to welcome her as a very special guest for the festival. She will discuss the film, it’s difficult journey to the screen and the positive impact it is having in Africa and around the world.” |
Award winning Spanish film Carmen & Lola will be shown on Saturday 23 March. Basque filmmaker Arantxa Echevarría made her debut last year at Cannes with her story of forbidden love between two young women in Madrid’s close-knit Roma Community.
Director Arantxa Echevarría was the first Spanish female filmmaker with a feature film in competition at the Directors’ Fortnight at the Cannes Film Festival. She received the Goya Award for Best Director, Spain's principal national film awards. The film is being shown in partnership with Happy Valley Pride at Hebden Bridge Picture House and will include a Skype Q&A with Arantxa. |
Tim Whitehead from Happy Valley Pride said
"Happy Valley Pride is over the moon that we have a brand new festival in Hebden Bridge. All the films celebrate ‘the other’ and Carmen and Lola is a perfect film for us to support.” |
Bafta-winning actress Jessica Hynes (W1A, Bridget Jones’ Baby) stars in our closing night film, The Fight).
The prolific Hynes has worked as a writer and actress for over two decades, receiving accolades for her most recent role in BBC drama There She Goes with David Tennant. The Fight is her directorial debut. As well as directing and writing the film, Hynes plays Tina, a mother who, attempting to juggle her dysfunctional family, takes up boxing to literally sweat out her anxieties. Hynes will take part in a special Q&A to discuss the themes of the film and the production process. |
Director, writer and star Jessica Hynes said
“The Fight is a tiny film with a big heart and Hebden Bridge is a tiny town with a big heart. So this is the perfect match. I am delighted to be showcasing the Fight as part of the first ever Hebden Bridge Film Festival. I am so proud of the entire cast and crew and can’t wait to share it with those attending the festival.” |
