EMPOWERING COMMUNITIES WITH FILM
Masterclass with Anne Marie Carty
Sunday 26 March | Town Hall | Doors 1:25 PM | Session 1:30 PM | End 3:00 PM
The session will explore the complexities of co-producing film with communities. By its very nature, not only the camera but the whole filmmaking process raises many ethical questions: How do you create safe spaces for film production, and ensure the community retains ownership of the narrative? How can film be used in community dialogue? Who has the resources and how can these be used for the best process and outcome? What ensures that representation is agreed by film participants?
We will discuss how to work with groups and communities to best support them to achieve what they want. We will think about how we can really listen to participants about how best to work together, and how we continue that listening throughout the project.
Anne Marie trained as a documentary filmmaker at the National Film and Television School and worked in broadcast TV for many years. With 30 years’ experience in using film and video as a tool for community participation, engagement and development, focusing on marginalised groups, her academic research focuses on developing participatory video techniques to use as prompts for community reflection, discussion and dialogue.
